The Antiqueño family that emerged as the 2024 Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya in Western Visayas believes education is their key to overcoming poverty.

Florence Pagsuguiron, a parent leader of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in the municipality of San Remigio, said it was an amazing experience for her and her family that despite many challenges, they emerged as the Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya regional winner during the awarding ceremony in Iloilo City on Sept. 25.

“I really made sure that the cash grants we receive from the 4Ps will be properly used to meet the needs of my children, especially on education,” she said in an interview.

Pagsuguiron said she is fortunate that all her six children were beneficiaries of the 4Ps, and her eldest, now a college graduate, is applying to the Philippine Coast Guard.

Two others are taking up Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering and BS in Civil Engineering, while the rest are in the secondary level and are consistent with honors.

“I always encourage our children to finish their schooling and participate in community services, for I believe these could help mold them to become better persons,” she added.

Pagsuguiron married at the early age of 18 years old but she made an effort to finish her Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSED) degree and pass the Licensure Examination for Teachers.

“I personally believe that I should finish my college education and set an example for my children. So, despite having children already and the financial hardship, I went back to school,” she said.

She worked as an Alternative Learning School teacher before taking a job as a contractual worker for the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), which ended on Sept. 15.

Her income augmented the grant they receive under the program and the meager income of her husband from his haircut and vulcanizing shop.

Pagsuguiron also encouraged other 4Ps parents to support their children so they could eventually finish their schooling.

Despite her busy schedule, she still finds time for volunteer work in their community.

Their children are also encouraged to be active members of the Sangguniang Kabataan (youth council) and serve as acolytes of the Children of Mary in their barangay.

She said that attending the 4Ps Family Development Sessions could help them learn a lot about how to raise their children, as well as manage their finances.

The Pagsuguiron family will receive the recognition and a plaque during the National Family Week celebration in Manila on Oct. 27-31. (PNA)
