Countries like America and Japan, with their advanced technology and innovation, have invented arcade-video games since the early 1970s, which are played by children and adults alike using video game machines and consoles.

They have introduced video games like Pong, Galaga, and Pac-Man that played a big role in nearly everyone’s childhood, especially in countries that were influenced by America and Japan, like the Philippines, and made other countries catch up with them.

Some of these video games were created back in the 1980s and 1990s, but because of their impact, game developers are still producing new, updated, or rebooted video games to provide entertainment to every video game enthusiast.

If you are one of those video game enthusiasts, maybe you have played one of these five video games from the 90s that we have found to be popular even to this day!

1. Mortal Kombat

Created by American video game developer NetherRealm Studios in 1992, Mortal Kombat is an arcade-turned-video fighting game series where the player has to choose a fighter out of the various unique characters of the game and combat other “warriors” to win and face the final “boss” in the tournament.

Mortal Kombat has released 12 game installments, with “Mortal Kombat 1” as the series’ second reboot, which will be released worldwide on September 19.

“Mortal Kombat 1” will also mark the beginning of a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe as it will display reimagined animation, gameplay, and characters.

Existing for over 30 years now, Mortal Kombat proves that it’s still one of the top video games in the world, as its fans, regardless of age, are still hyping the “Mortal Kombat 1” gameplay trailer on social media.

2. The Legend of Zelda

Created by Japanese multinational video game company Nintendo in 1986, the action-adventure video game The Legend of Zelda is hailed as one of the most famous gaming franchises to ever exist.

With its breathtaking animation, creative gameplay, fascinating storyline and characters, and stunning original music, The Legend of Zelda sure has captured the hearts of most video gamers out there.

Consisting of 22 video game releases, The Legend of Zelda is set in the Kingdom of Hyrule, where a hero has to rescue his princess and defeat the dark lord who seeks to overthrow the kingdom by finding the eight golden triangles with mystical powers throughout the realm.

The most popular game in the series, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” was released in 2017 and sold 31 million copies alone.

The sequel to “Breath of the Wild” and the latest game in the franchise, “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” were released on May 12 and sold 10 million copies in their first three days of release.

3. Resident Evil

Created by Japanese video game company Capcom in 1996, Resident Evil is considered one of the greatest video games of all time.

Resident Evil, also known as Biohazard, is a survival horror game series where players follow a storyline consisting of missions that require them to escape and survive in environments where zombies and other terrifying creatures reside.

Among the 18 installments of the video game, “Resident Evil 4,” released in 2005, is the most highly regarded due to the fact that it introduced and popularized third-person elements and responsive action mechanics in the gaming industry, such as the over-the-shoulder view, which became the norm in video games today.

A “Resident Evil 4” remake was released last March and sold four million copies in its first two weeks; it follows the story of special agent Leon S. Kennedy as he is led to a small village in Europe by eyewitness reports to rescue the U.S. President’s daughter, who was kidnapped.

Aside from the video game series, Resident Evil has expanded to a variety of other media, including CGI movies directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Mila Jovovich and theme park attractions.

4. Grand Theft Auto

Developed by American video game company Rockstar Games in 1998, Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is an action-adventure video game series that has become even more popular since the release of its fifth installment, “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” in 2004.

Grand Theft Auto is an open-world video game, a term that refers to the ability of the players to have the freedom to visit the game environment anytime, that is centered on the lives of criminals.

Although Grand Theft Auto has received backlash because it somehow glorifies lawbreaking and humanizes criminals, Rockstar has not stopped producing new versions of the series.

Released in 2021, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition is Rockstar’s latest GTA game, which consists of an enhanced version of three GTA games, namely Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

5. Final Fantasy

Created by a Japanese video game production enterprise in 1987, Final Fantasy is a role-playing sci-fi video game where a group of characters team up to fight a central antagonist and save their world from evil domination.

Like most of the role-playing games out there, Final Fantasy characters have superhuman abilities that develop over the course of the game through battles and acquiring weapons and power-ups.

Its seventh installment, “Final Fantasy VII,” which was released in 1997, made the series more popular in the West as it debuted on PlayStation, introducing new and long-time video gamers to its creative worldbuilding, gameplay, and in-depth storytelling.

“Final Fantasy VII” is so popular that a remake project consisting of a trilogy and two spin-offs is dedicated to the seventh installment alone.

The first part of the trilogy is “Final Fantasy VII Remake,” which was released in 2020; the second part is “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,” which is set to release in 2024; and the third part is “Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis,” which has no official release date yet.

Whether it has been part of your childhood or you are spoiling your inner child just now, playing video games truly gives entertainment and satisfaction.
