Education Secretary Sonny Angara on Wednesday ordered the Department of Education Bureau and Service Directors in the Central Office, Regional Directors (RDs), and Schools Division Superintendents (SDSs) to “exhaust all measures” to speed up the hiring process for all vacant positions of the department.

Angara issued the directive after the DepEd disclosed the need to fill vacant posts including all “new teaching and non-teaching DepEd-authorized positions” per DepEd Memorandum No. 42, s. 2024.

As of May, 46,703 out of the 1,030,897 authorized DepEd positions are still vacant.

“The identified remaining vacant items pose a challenge to the operations of offices and the absorptive capacity of DepEd,” the DepEd said in a statement.

Besides this, Angara also ordered the “timely” updating of the Personal Services Itemization and Plantilla of Personnel and the DBM-GMIS database, Program Management Information System, Quick Count for FY 2024 items, and the Deployment Monitoring Tool to ensure accurate monitoring of DepEd filled and vacant items.

Angara’s directives are among his first official acts following the confirmation of his ad-interim appointment as Education chief.

He also signed the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) No. 11997 or the “Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo” Act, which provides a teaching allowance to public school teachers. (PNA)
