The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol (DSWD-5) continues to roll out its “Tara, Basa!” Tutoring Program (TBTP) across three provinces, benefiting over 4,200 participants during the first two-day sessions.

In a report on Wednesday, DSWD-5 Regional Director Norman Laurio said the program is being implemented in the towns of Bulan in Sorsogon, Daraga in Albay, and Libmanan in Camarines Sur.

The initiative, under Executive Order No. 76, includes 393 college student-tutors, 196 youth development workers (YDWs), 1,855 parents, and 1,797 learners.

The 20-day program will run until June 14.

TBTP is a cash-for-work educational assistance program that enlists college students to tutor young children —particularly incoming Grade 2 pupils who are struggling with reading.

“Tutors facilitate sessions for children struggling with reading, especially those entering Grade 2 next school year, to help them build essential literacy skills suited to their current level and learning needs,” Laurio said.

The program also features “nanay-tatay” sessions for parents to improve their parenting skills and involvement in their children’s learning journey.

“Parents are beginning to share their experiences and insights about their roles in raising and shaping their children,” he added.

Laurio said the program not only enhances children’s literacy but also promotes youth participation and empowers families, especially those from low-income communities. (PNA)
