La Carlota City in Negros Occidental is hosting two United Kingdom-based researchers who came to study the bamboo-based housing technology adopted by the city government.

Mayor Jose Luis Jalandoni met with Clement Glenisson and Alice Grogan of the International Institute for Environment and Development on March 16 to discuss how the city’s housing models contribute to social impact and sustainable construction policy.

“They are studying how these local models contribute to sustainable construction and climate-resilient housing. The findings from La Carlota will serve as a guide for future housing initiatives across the Philippines and the global community,” the city government said in a statement.

City Planning and Development Office head Jose Ainar Apdol explained to the researchers the technical durability of bamboo-based construction adopted by the city in its housing program.

The Luis Jalandoni Village, also known as Jacky Ville, located in Barangay Ayungon, hosts 100 disaster-resilient houses that use the cement bamboo frame technology.

Cement bamboo frame homes are found to be resistant to typhoons, earthquakes, fires, and insect infestation.

The city government implemented the housing program in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, Base Bahay Foundation, Hilti Foundation, and the provincial government.

The Luis Jalandoni Village Project is named after the late city mayors, Luis “Nonoy” Jalandoni Jr. and Luis “Jacky” Jalandoni III, for their exemplary work and service to the people of La Carlota. (PNA)
