Dinagat Islands Gov. Nilo Demerey Jr. met with Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) officials in Manila to push forward the proposed expansion and modernization of the Cagdianao Port, a project seen as vital to the province’s economic future.
Demerey sat down with PPA General Manager Jay Santiago and Assistant General Manager for Administration and Finance Elmer Nonnatus Cadano at the agency’s central office on Tuesday to discuss the plan, including a proposed PHP500 million funding support for the port’s development.
“This project is a long-term investment that will transform Dinagat Islands into a hub for commerce, tourism, and sustainable growth,” Demerey said in a message sent to the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday.
The modernization plan envisions the Cagdianao Port as a gateway for roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) operations, improving the transport of passengers, cargo and essential services between the island province and neighboring provinces and regions, he added.
“With enhanced connectivity, we can ensure that goods and services flow more efficiently, benefiting both our local communities and regional trade partners,” Demerey said.
The officials also discussed the port’s potential to accommodate cruise ships in the future, opening the Dinagat Islands to international travelers and new investment opportunities.
“We want Dinagat to be on the map for global tourism. A modern port is the first step toward welcoming visitors from around the world,” Demerey said.
He added that the modernization will further enhance the Siargao-Dinagat tourism route, which has been in place for two years. The route was formally opened in April 2024 to rapidly boost tourism and the transportation of agricultural products from Dinagat to Siargao.
“Every phase of this development will generate employment and expand opportunities for our people,” Demerey said.
The provincial government of Dinagat Islands, he added, has been strengthening collaboration with national agencies to secure strategic projects that align with its vision for sustainable development.
“Partnership is the key. By working closely with the PPA and other agencies, we can accelerate progress for our province,” Demerey said. (PNA)
