Young student artists showcases their creativity and craftsmanship as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) launches Pasinaya, the biggest multi-arts festival in the country, this Saturday, February 3, 2024.
The open house offers around 300 shows, workshops, and interactive activities in music, theater, dance, visual arts, film, and literature.
While on-site events are set to fill the spaces of the CCP Front Lawn, Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez, Vicente Sotto Street, and Liwasang Kalikasan, the segment of Paseo Museo invites spectators into the various galleries and art spaces in and outside of Manila.
Included in this much-awaited roster is Art Punô!, a one-day art fest that celebrates the ingenuity and skills of the promising homegrown talents from the courses and organizations of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB).
A play on the Filipino word “puno”, which means “to be full of”, the activity promises an exhilarating day filled with imagination, inventiveness, and individuality.
Organized by the Benilde Arts Management (BeAM), the line-up includes a tour of the 30 Lives exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD). It features an array of works that respond to themes of play and strategy as well as original game applications and software developed by Interactive Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (IEMC) students.
Also on display is a wide range of comics made by budding illustrators from DrawINK. The catalog houses a vast display of genres, such as slice of life, mystery, Filipino mythology, fantasy, thriller, horror, and romance. Titles include Monsters Beyond Us, Adventurer’s Stop, and Love, Faith.
Artelier, a team of traditional visual artists, likewise sets up a gallery of paintings that explore the theme “Kinaiya”, which refers to inner character. It focuses on the unique characteristics and ventures that shape an artist.
Also on deck is a watercolor workshop to be facilitated by painter, educator, and Artelier mentor Abe Orobia together with young artists Kianna Ysobelle Diaz and Ysshi Carla Caburnay. The challenge: Blend watercolor techniques to make a mini-zine following the motif “New Beginnings.”
A video screening of (Pwedeng) Hindi Totoo: Baba sa Sirko Dugo!, a devised play by Theater Arts and Production Design, is also on view. Set amid the floor-to-ceiling Hindi Totoo mural of CCP Thirteen Artists Awardee Doktor Karayom, the engaging performance takes the audience on a quest through a metaphysical dimension. It was directed by Lawyn Cruz, co-directed by Mikaella Yoj Sanchez, with physical coaching by Jenny Logico-Cruz and music by Why July.
Produced by the Center for Campus Art (CCA) in celebration of the 35th year of the institution, “The Benildean Painter” introduces the established and emerging visual artists from the college. It takes attendees on a journey of understanding how diverse disciplines have led to multifarious practices about painting in the contemporary world.
Participants may likewise learn the fundamentals of Virtual Reality (VR) and its application in the creative industries in a hands-on workshop by motion graphic artist and educator Yolec Homecillo. Led by Animotion, it also displays original works by the Animation aspirants.
Non-Benildean guests may likewise get a glimpse of the sprawling line-up of debut collections and capstone projects currently displayed along the hallways of the 14-story state-of-the-art Design + Arts Campus.
Meanwhile, novel and affordable art pieces by Benildean artists await at the Art Mart.
Art Punô is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Benilde Design + Arts Campus on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
