A lawmaker on Wednesday lauded the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for its significant contribution in strengthening the economy and in reducing unemployment rate.

Marikina 2nd District Rep. Stella Quimbo said the decline of unemployment from 4.5 percent in June 2023 to 3.1 percent in June this year is a proof of DOLE’s effective implementation of programs for the benefit of the labor sector.

“Ang pagbaba ng unemployment rate ay isang positibong indikasyon na mas maraming Pilipino ang may hanapbuhay at mas maraming pamilya ang nagkakaroon ng pag-asa (The fall of unemployment is a positive indication that more Filipinos have jobs, and more families gain hope),” Quimbo said.

However, she said it is important for the people to feel the real essence of this success in their day-to-day living.

“Ang mga numero ay mahalaga, ngunit higit na mahalaga na ang mga programang ito ay tunay na nagdadala ng pagbabago sa mga komunidad, lalo na sa mga pinaka nangangailangan (These numbers are important, but it’s more important that these programs [of DOLE] are really bringing changes among communities, especially to those who are need most),” Quimbo said.

She commended the DOLE’s Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, which has provided emergency employment to 6.55 million displaced and disadvantaged workers from June 2022 to July 2024.

However, she underscored the need for a swift and effective implementation of other programs like the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP)-Kabuhayan, which has helped some 206,000 beneficiaries.

Quimbo urged DOLE to keep on monitoring these programs to ensure that this particular success in employment is felt by every Filipino, particularly those in the grassroot level. (PNA)
