All nine district engineering offices (DEOs) of the Department of Public Works and Highways – National Capital Region (DPWH-NCR) on Monday have started cleaning and clearing operations amid improved weather conditions in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Karding.

In a Facebook post, the DPWH-NCR said early maintenance activities such as declogging of inlets; cleaning of debris/fallen trees, and culverts; hauling and clearing of spoils; and pothole patching are being done throughout the region.

The situation in low-lying areas in the region such as Roxas Boulevard and España Boulevard in Manila and the cities of Marikina and Quezon City have now improved, as reports from the ground show that all roads are passable as of 6 a.m. Monday.

It added that only two roads — Gov. T. Santiago and G. Lazaro streets in Valenzuela are under pavement-deep floods.

As the Marikina River’s water level subsided to 16.3 meters, maintenance crew were deployed to haul debris and clean surrounding areas immediately.

The maintenance crew of the DEOs were also on standby as early as last weekend to prepare and monitor roads as well as respond to flooded areas by declogging drainages and clearing fallen trees along national roads.

DPWH-NCR director Nomer Abel Canlas ordered DEOs to immediately replace uprooted, cut and damaged trees along center islands across the region. (PNA)
