The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol (DSWD-5) has provided over PHP9.72 million in family food packs (FFPs) to families affected by the continuous rains caused by the shear line in Sorsogon province.

In a report released on Tuesday, DSWD-5 Regional Director Norman Laurio said over 13,000 families from 39 barangays in Sorsogon City received assistance on Feb. 9 and 10.

Laurio said the relief distribution aims to offer immediate support, particularly addressing the food needs of families whose livelihoods have been severely impacted by the prolonged heavy rains and flooding associated with the ongoing effects of the shear line in the region.

To ensure that the relief items reached every affected family, the Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD) and the DSWD Bicol Quick Response Team (QRT) in Sorsogon City personally delivered the supplies.

He added the DSWD-5 field office remains committed to assisting other areas in the region that have also been severely affected by ongoing weather disturbances and other disasters.

Meanwhile, the DSWD Bicol provided immediate aid to a family in Legazpi City, Albay, that was affected by a landslide.

The landslide, triggered by the continuous heavy rains from the shear line over the weekend, caused flooding in several areas of Albay, partially burying the family’s house.

The affected family is currently staying with nearby relatives, and fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The DSWD Bicol has dispatched relief assistance, which included two family food packs and a set of non-food items worth PHP11,000.

The DSWD Bicol said it is working closely with the city government of Legazpi and other relevant agencies to address the family’s additional needs. (PNA)
