The scholarship program for the poor in Eastern Samar has enlisted 594 beneficiaries in 2023, giving indigent students from remote communities access to tertiary education.
The provincial government reported on Wednesday its “Isang Propesyonal, Isang Pamilya Program” was strengthened last year as part of poverty alleviation initiatives.
Launched early last year, the assistance with PHP15 million in funding, has been extended to families from far-flung communities without college graduates. Each beneficiary receives a PHP3,000 monthly allowance.
Beneficiaries need to maintain a passing grade, according to the provincial government.
“The program is intended for students who are in dire need. Our aim is that at least one child per poor family finishes his or her education, assists in seeking employment later, and alleviates the family’s economic status,” it said.
Students must be enrolled at the Eastern Samar State University, which has campuses in Borongan City, Guiuan, Salcedo, Can-avid, Maydolong, Balangiga, and Arteche towns.
This year, the scholarship program has an allocation of PHP15 million, on top of contributions from the Metro Bank Foundation, Waray-Waray Golf Club, government officials, and private individuals. (PNA)
