Since its launch in 2013, Art Fair Philippines has been represented as a prime venue for showcasing and selling the best in modern and contemporary Philippine visual art.

The annual event has been noted for showcasing the best of contemporary art in the Philippines through a collection of featured artists and invited art galleries and museums.

After an unexpected halt, the country’s premier art fair that is well attended by both long-time collectors and newbie art enthusiasts is finally happening with a mix of physical and digital exhibitions which will open on March 23 and will run until April 1—physical exhibitions set up at Ayala Triangle Gardens and other gallery venues, while online shows and other activities are accessible on its official website.

For this year’s edition, the “phygital” event will present 46 exhibitors from the country and international that will showcase the artworks in their respective physical locations, as well as through the fair’s website’s online viewing rooms.

It is remembered that in 2020, Art Fair Philippines managed to push through with its annual live show at its then location The Link Car Park before everything was put to a halt. While the country is under the “new normal”, the 2021 Art Fair was then decided to hold its 2021 version online.

This year, as ARTFairPH is back together with its face-to-face art glory and is ready to transform the Ayala Triangle Gardens into a busy site of galleries and art talks, here’s a rundown of what you need to know about the Art Fair Philippines 2022:

Art Fair Philippines 2022 Featured Artists

This year’s ArtFairPH/Projects will be held in 2022, and the roster includes a unique combination of young and old Filipino artists.

Norman Crisologo has curated the collection, which includes paintings by the late Arô Soriano and famous social realist Nune Alvarado. Bjorn Calleja, Johanna Helmuth, Ryan Jara, Doctor Karayom, Tyang Karyel, Aze Ong, Wyndelle Remonde, and Melvin Gurheim have all contributed new works (recipient of the Karen H. Montinola Selection).

Sasha Frolova, a Russian artist known for her work in the fields of performance art and sculpture, will also give a special presentation. The works of the featured artists can be found in the Ayala Tower One Area.

The Ayala Triangle Gardens will host an on-site screening of this year’s ArtFairPH/Film. You can see digital films by Jeremy Couillard, a New York-based new media artist known for his funny dystopian storylines. His newest film, There Is No Up Or Down, Only Attraction, will be on display, as well as three works from his Fuzz Spiral series, which is based on the artist’s video game Fuzz Dungeon.

ArtFairPH/Photo, on the other hand, will be on exhibit in the Serpentine Gardens’ covered section. Mark Nicdao, Neal Oshima, Michael Salientes, and Gio Panlilio are the curators.

Art Fair Philippines 2022 Online Events

Guests will be able to participate in the Gallery Walkthrough on March 23 and 24, which will take them on virtual tours of the exhibitors.

Paco Barragán, a Madrid-based curator and arts writer, is hosting a virtual debate about art collecting at ArtFairPH/Talks.

ArtFairPH/Tours is also going digital with video documentation by Nona Garcia, Abbie Lara, and Kawayan de Guia, as well as a video tour of Plet Bolipata and Elmer Borlongan’s artist spaces.

Finally, the ArtFairPH/Open Studios presents Jezzel Wee, Marco Rosario, Ella Mendoza, Krista Nogueras, Jon Pettyjohn, and Joey de Castro in a three-part series of ceramic demos titled Conversations on Clay. The talks will be accessible on the ArtFairPH website.

Art Fair Philippines 2022 Gallery Hops

Art Fair Philippines strongly encourages its guests to visit the physical premises of its exhibitors and engage in live art experiences.

Of the 46 exhibitors, guests can visit the 33 that are located across Metro Manila.

To make it easier to plan out routes for attending the gallery displays, please refer to the fair’s Gallery Hop section. We’ve categorized our exhibitors by their locations to make it easier for art aficionados to plan their visits during the show.

Art Fair Philippines 2022 New Features

The exhibition output of ArtFairPH/Residencies, which began in 2021 when the fair invited artists to apply for a residence program project, is one of this year’s new attractions. Derek Tumala will be at the Manila Observatory in Quezon City, Hannah Nantes will be at the Linangan Art Residency in Cavite, Jao San Pedro will be at Emerging Islands in La Union, Alwin Reamillo will be at The Orange Project in Bacolod, and Faye Abantao will be at Butanding Barrio in Puerto Princesa. The Ayala Triangle will host a presentation of their initiatives.

The AR Art Trail, named after Leeroy New’s artwork “Aparisyon,” is another wonderful addition. Visitors can follow an interactive augmented reality trail at the Ayala Triangle Gardens with the help of a free smartphone app. Meanwhile, it also contains a narrative named Let Me Hold Your Hand by writer Eliza Victoria. Jeremy Couillard, Eva Papamargariti, Elliot Dodd, Tuomas Laitinen, Keiken, Aaajiao, and Florian Meisenberg are among the artists featured in the exhibition.

Art Fair Philippines 2022 10 Days of Art

As Art Fair Philippines 2022 runs from March 23 to April 1, 10 Days of Art is part of Art Fair Philippines’ attempts to bring art closer to the people. As in previous years, the 10-day art festival features public art installations across the Makati Central Business District.

At the plinth in front of the Ayala Museum, an art piece by James Clar titled I Can’t Tell You What I Don’t Know, Only That I Don’t Know will be one of the year’s major public art shows. The Greenbelt 5 Gallery will also feature works by Juanito Torres and Norman Dreo, two solo exhibits that will be in discussion under the title Perspectives.

The Art Fair Philippines 2022 will take place at Ayala Triangle Gardens, Paseo De Roxas Street corner Makati Avenue corner Ayala Avenue, Makati City, from March 23 to April 1.
