The Sangguniang Panlungsod is crafting an ordinance to position this city as a premier destination for medical tourism.

Councilor Candice Magdalane Tupas, the ordinance’s author, highlighted the city’s potential to expand its tourism offerings by including its healthcare system.

“Since Iloilo City is actively promoting itself as a tourist destination, why not showcase our health services too? We have excellent hospitals and clinics with modern facilities and skilled professionals. I am confident in our city’s ability to cater to tourists seeking wellness and executive checkups,” Tupas said in an interview on Thursday.

She noted that Iloilo has already attracted international patients for follow-up consultations due to the reputation of its doctors and competitive fees.

Tupas expressed hope that local plastic surgeons would venture into aesthetic procedures, as their focus has largely been on reconstructive surgeries for conditions like burns, cleft lips, and palates.

A radiologist by profession, Tupas is optimistic the ordinance will serve as a legacy as she nears the end of her final term.

“This ordinance reflects my vision of integrating health with tourism and trade. I aim for health to be seen as a preventive and lifestyle-enhancing endeavor, not just a response to problems,” she added.

The Sanggunian approved the ordinance during its regular session on Wednesday. (PNA)
