President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday urged Filipinos to participate in the 2026 Earth Hour and adopt sustainable habits that will help address climate change and promote responsible energy use.

In a video message, Marcos said the annual observance offers a timely opportunity to reflect on environmental protection, energy conservation and the need to limit fuel consumption amid the current global challenges.

“Earth Hour reminds us that how we use energy affects us all and shows not just our ways, but also the kind of future that we choose to build for our nation and our planet,” Marcos said.

Marcos emphasized that simple actions, such as switching off lights for an hour, can contribute to a broader effort to protect the environment and secure a sustainable future.

He called on Filipinos to take part in this year’s observance and be guided by its theme, “Switch on Habits for Earth.”

“May the true meaning of Earth Hour be part of our lives starting tonight. Let it guide our habits and former actions, and inspire cooperation among our communities towards responsible and sustainable energy use,” Marcos said.

“Together, let us ensure that the light of the Filipino spirit continues to shine with hope for a brighter future for all,” he added.

Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna emphasized the link between environmental issues and daily concerns, such as rising temperatures, flooding and electricity costs.

Cuna said these challenges show that environmental protection is closely tied to the daily lives of Filipinos.

“That is why the President has been clear: The government must act on the problems people feel every day and act now,” he said in a separate statement.

Cuna noted that under the President’s directive, the government continues efforts to clean waterways, strengthen flood prevention, ensure access to clean water, and manage natural resources to make communities safer and stabilize costs.

He stressed that public participation remains crucial.

“The government cannot do this alone. This Earth Hour, we ask every Filipino to take one simple step: Switch off lights and unplug what is not needed. One hour may seem small but together, it means less strain on energy, less pressure on our environment, and a step toward protecting our homes and our future,” Cuna said.

Earth Hour is a global initiative that encourages individuals, communities, and institutions to switch off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbolic commitment to environmental protection and climate action. (PNA)
