The Philippines and Malaysia’s aviation bodies have formed a partnership to boost search and rescue (SAR) operations.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said it has met with its Malaysian counterpart on Wednesday to form a SAR working group to exchange best practices.

“The Philippines actively participates in regional SAR initiatives, such as the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER) and works closely with neighboring countries for cross-border SAR operations,” CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio told the Philippine News Agency.

Together with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) as a new partner, they will develop strategies, and improve coordination for aeronautical SAR operations.

According to CAAP, the partnership is expected to boost the region’s capability to respond to emergencies effectively, and foster stronger ties between the two nations.

It added that the partnership underscores the shared commitment of the Philippines and Malaysia to addressing SAR challenges, enhancing regional cooperation, and ensuring aviation safety and security across their territories.

Before this partnership, Apolonio said CAAP also signed agreements with Japan, the United States, and Australia for capacity building and technical assistance.

Meanwhile, Apolonio said the CAAP ensures SAR operations practices comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standards.

He said the Philippines’s aeronautical SAR operations emphasize inter-agency coordination and community involvement. (PNA)
